Ratings of Assignments 1-10
Ratings 1-6 (favorite to least favorite)
1. Bolex Long Take
- I really, really loved this assignment. I had never worked with a Bolex before and actual film development, so this was a cool experiment for me. This was probably the most enjoyable part for me in regard to the assignment as well as the class. It forces one to plan and make sure you know exactly what you want out of a shot before the record button is pressed. I feel as though I have been lulled into a sense of complacency in today's digital world, so to take a step back and see how it originally began felt like I went back in time a little bit and got in touch with the root of film. Actual film!
2. Direct Address Video Letter
-I had never done anything like this before and it was really interesting to figure out how to write a letter to myself. I had a lot of things going through my mind when this assignment was presented and the restrictions you used cultivated creativity. I wasn't able to use conventional methods to complete the assignment so I had to think a little outside the box on this one, while also clearly conveying a message. It taught me how to use screen capture and record from my laptop which I had never done before so that will definitely be useful in my years to come regarding my pursuit of cinema and production.
3. Rhythmic Edit
-I have always wanted to do something like this but I simply didn't know how or what. I really liked how you got us to create an alter ego of sorts because that allowed some creativity and story telling to come into play. It looks so cool! I feel like I created something I can use practically because I want to make music videos and things of the nature in the future and I've definitely seen the same type deal within other music videos.
4. Direct Film Manipulation
-Never have I before been able to work with actual film stock so this was a really enjoyable experience for me. It made me appreciate film makers such as Stan Brakhage who used these techniques almost exclusively in his films. Somehow, he was able to project his subconscious onto screen and do so much with so little.
5. Creative Crowdsourcing
-I feel like it is necessary to say that my 3-6 are definitely tied. It was so cool to work on a piece of a project and see it manifest into something me and numerous others have done! I was really excited to see the final product and felt giddy when I saw my contribution. It was also awesome to see what a congregation of creative people could do with simply a marker and some card stock. The sound track added an element to it as well because it created atmosphere to the entire thing.
6. Earth Art Animation
-I had had never done animation of any sort before this and I actually really enjoyed it. Yes, it is tedious, but when I watched the final product I felt like I had earned the final product in a way. It took a long time just to create one minute of a film and the time filming and planning the project really gave me and my partner time to conceptualize and plan where we wanted it to go. It ended up being something we put a lot of time and effort into. I also definitely gained a lot of respect to animators!
